B.A. STAR Female Scholars Attend Cotillion!
Sunday, April 29, 2018, was a pivotal day in the lives of a group of students in the B.A. STAR mentoring program of Horizons On Hudson. The acronym, B.A. STAR stands for Building African-American Success, Talent, Achievement, and Respect.
Our mentees were treated to an evening of elegance thanks to the benevolence Mrs. Carol Johnson-Cromer and the Mid-Hudson Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Nine students attended the biennial Jabberwock Cotillion in which nine high school juniors and seniors were featured as Debutantes. The debutantes were hand selected from this region as a result of their exemplary achievements in school and in their local community. The process to becoming a Debutante is a path that is for committed young ladies who are preparing to be future leaders. During this process, the debutantes attended workshops such as: college preparation, career building, a mother-daughter tea, and many other activities.
During the cotillion, the debs were acknowledged for their achievements. Additionally, a large component of the ball is fundraising. As a result of her diligent efforts, Miss Briana Dembo won the distinction of 2018 Miss Jabberwock Cotillion.
Our students were able to experience the splendor of the debutantes and the pageantry of a formal event. Additionally, some mothers of our students were able to attend. They were enthusiastic and danced the night away!
By attending this event, the goal of the mentors was to expose the B.A. STAR students to something they have not experienced before. Hopefully, this will whet the appetite of the girls to strive for excellence in all that they do. Also, that hard work will be rewarded.
