Mr. Olsen's 6th Grade English Class Learns A Lesson on Real Beauty
Last week, the students in Mr. Olsen’s 6th grade English class at Heritage Middle School, Scholars had the chance to see an experiment run by Dove. The experimentation by Dove is named
After watching the video, the class had the opportunity to talk openly about how the way we perceive ourselves is much different than the rest of the world sees us. Mr. Olsen wanted the students to know that each and every one of them DO have something beautiful about themselves. Mr. Olsen wanted them to understand that they have the right to think of themselves as being beautiful; it is not being haughty for them to think that way. Mr. Olsen explained multiple times that we as humans are our own worst critic(s). The class spoke about how often we disapprove of a physical feature that no one else even sees but us. The students agreed; that it’s unfortunate that our self-criticism alters our moods, energy levels, and expectations of our days. This lesson and activity gave all of them the reminder….they ARE beautiful. They each had the chance to sketch their favorite most beautiful part about them. Many children chose their eyes, their hair, and their ears. My favorites where when a few students chose their smile or the way their face looks with their glasses on.
From students:
Alessandra Hickey said “This was a very inspirational experiment. It taught people to love yourself and everyone is beautiful in their own way. It also taught us that others see us differently.”
Michelle Prado said “It got students to really think about themselves. The video was empowering and probably made people feel better about themselves. I feel like the video also made people feel less self-conscious.”
Richard Chen said “I think the experiment was fascinating just to see people having a poor self-image to then realizing how beautiful they are according to the people around them.”
Adrianna Ochang said “This experiment and lesson was very effective. It taught other people and showed other people how strangers see them. The lesson taught me to see the true beauty within myself. I think the experiment and lesson should be taught to everyone.”
