Temple Hill Artists Learn and Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos
The Day of the Dead (el Día De Los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration. Students in grades 6-8 were learning about the holiday in Mr. Murphy's Spanish classes and collaborated cross-curricularly with their art teacher Ms. Dutcher to honor the holiday and introduce students to different cultural celebrations.
Students learned about artist Jose Guadalupe Posada's artwork depicting one the most recognizable Day of the Dead Icons; La Calavera Catrina (Elegant Skull). Students learned about the traditional symbolism of Sugar Skulls, Butterflies, and Flowers in relation to Dia De Los Muertos. Featured here are some photos of students work in progress and the final display board highlighting Temple Hill Academy's Middle School Artists and their beautifully done Sugar Skulls.
Story and photos provided by Ms. Dutcher.
