Fire Prevention Week Celebrated at Gardnertown Leadership Academy
The Cronomer Valley Fire Department visited Gardnertown Leadership Academy for National Fire Prevention Week. The firefighters gave the scholars a tour of their fire engine, fire truck, and gear. They explained all of the different tools and equipment that is needed for their personal safety while fighting a fire. They also discussed fire prevention and the steps to take in the event of a fire.
In addition to smoke detector operation and escape plans, the firefighters spoke on safety in the kitchen since unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires and deaths in the home. They asked that everyone take the time to discuss fire prevention in the home and as always check your detectors to make sure they are working. The Cronomer Valley mascot, Sparky also made an appearance.
Gardnertown principal, Mr. Danny Dottin, went up 96 feet in the sky on the CVFD aerial ladder. His students were in awe of his bravery!
Mrs. Depoala received a special surprise when one of the Firemen turned out to be one of her former students. He thanked her for always being a great educator and for helping him to believe in himself when he was a student in her class a decade ago.
National Fire Prevention Week is observed in the United States and Canada during the week, in which October 9 falls. In the United States, the first Presidential Proclamation of Fire Prevention Week was made in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge.
The theme for National Fire Prevention Month 2023 is “Cooking Safety Starts with You.” The theme highlights the importance of practicing safe cooking skills at home. Previous themes include “Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape” and “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.”
