NECSD Scholars are Loving the Summer LEGO Academy
First through 5th grade scholars in 21st Century's ESYP (Extended School Year Program) Summer Lego Academy have been working with LEGO Education’s WeDo 2.0 Curriculum building robots, learning to code them, and exploring ways to solve real life problems using their creations. The scholars also have had the opportunity to create different designs online and bring them to life with giant sized LEGOs. These STEM-based projects are embedded with English, language arts and math exercises aligned to the science and technology state learning standards.
On Monday, July 25th, 1st grade scholars were provided LEGO racecar kits which they built and coded to race. The group with both 1st and 2nd graders were given kits for building helicopters that would be participating in a pretend LEGO rescue mission selected from the imaginations of the children. The older scholars in the combined 3rd, 4th and 5th grade group were presented with different construction challenges using giant LEGOs. The challenges included working as a team to build houses, buildings, bridges, bunk beds, chairs, and animals. Some made castles and cozy homes while others built stores.
