NFA West students host International Celebration
On Friday, November 17th, NFA West hosted an International Celebration, complete with food, music, and dancing
“Students bring food from different cultures. There are so many different foods that I've never tried before that I get to try today. And we get to all eat as a big family and learn about different foods together and the cultures they represent.” Sabrina, 11th grade
Last year, two students started the event and it has become a tradition. Malaya, 11th grade and Gianna, 12th grade thought of the idea as a way to celebrate together and learn from each other.
“Last year, we thought of the idea… well, we kind of all like to eat! A lot of people can't celebrate Thanksgiving because of their religions. This International Celebration allows for everyone to still have a celebration, for us to still come together as the big family we are and share a meal together.”
As a Big Picture School, everything is student centered. Students came up with the idea, created an Excel sheet with list of all students, spoke to each advisory about the event and had students fill out the spreadsheet with what they're going to bring. The teachers of NFA West chip in to order pizza just in case there isn’t enough food, but so far, that hasn’t been a problem and the students and their families bring more than enough food for everyone.
"I brought rice because I’m Puerto Rican. It's the most common thing to me. If you don't have cereal, you probably eat the rice and beans Abuela made last night" Anthony, 11th grade
“I brought Pataloin, which is platanos, beef, and cheese. It’s one of the tradition dishes in the Dominican republican and it's one of my favorites that my mom makes.” Kayla 11th grade
