South Middle School Students Make Their Own Instruments
Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is a celebration of why music is important in school. Students have read about the effect music has on our brain and our body, as well as the impact it has on our lives as a whole. In Ms. Nicole Lorenzo's class at South Middle School embarked on a project to make their own instruments.
The objective was to create and perform on an instrument that they have made out of materials they have found. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate their ability to create and perform on an instrument that they have made.
Ms. Lorenzo's students were given the freedom to create a replica of an existing instrument or create an original one based off of the instrument families by using any method of their choice.
Students completed a series of questions relating to their instrument and were also be expected to perform for the rest of the class. Ms. Theresa Brown, Director of Fine and Performing Arts was present for the presentation and asked several questions about the hand made instruments.
Many students have a whole new perspective of how music effects us and really enjoyed creating their projects. It was also a time for many of them to spend quality time with their families.
"The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages."
