2nd Grade Math Meets Held At Temple Hill & Fostertown Schools
36 second grade students were chosen to participate in the 2nd grade math battle. Math Meets were held at both Temple Hill Academy and Fostertown School.
Students worked in teams of 3 to solve math problems. While the problems were read aloud to students, all the math thinking and explanations came from the students. Students had access to a variety of math manipulatives when solving their problems to encourage concrete problem solving and push them towards more abstract thinking.
This math battle was modeled after the 5th grade math meets. Learning to collaborate, persevere through difficult problems, and explain your problem solving process are part of the math practice standards K-6. When younger students have opportunities to push their mathematical thinking and explain their problem solving process in numbers, pictures, and words in the early grades they become more flexible with their ability to use a variety of math strategies in the later grades.
