NECSD Celebrates Annual Pink Day!
Pink Day was established at Heritage about 10 years ago in support of a colleague that was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. During her fight her Heritage colleagues would all wear pink. South Middle School joined in the tradition of Pink Day along with Heritage as a way to honor that same colleague who ended up losing her battle with cancer. Over the last 4 years it has become a district event knowing that many of our faculty, staff, and students have been affected by not only Breast Cancer, but all forms of cancer.
Led by the NFA Golden Eagle Marching Band, this year walking the track are either survivors, people currently battling a form of cancer, or supporters who want a cure. Ms. Janet DeStefano, current teacher at Vails Gate STEAM Academy was honored this year. Ms. DeStefano is a breast cancer survivor who has been cancer free for 11 years now! Janet participates in breast cancer walks to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. She reaches out to breast cancer patients to offer support and share her story with them. Janet credits her Vails Gate friends, family and students for giving her the energy to fight her cancer. Janet is grateful to have had such wonderful support from her Vails Gate Family. We are incredibly proud of her!
The National Anthem was played by NFA Marching Band under the direction of Mr. Chris Zoutis, sung by the Madrigals, under the direction of Ms. Jillian Caci, and the colors presented by the Air Force Junior ROTC under the leadership of Col Seward and Master Sergeant Granda.
The ceremonial coin flip was conducted by NFA’s Own Michelle McKnight.
